“Every Eight Hour”

“Every Eight Hour... It was the name of a book that one of the executives of the International Cerebral Palsy Society in London gave me on a cold and wet day in 1971.

Then I remembered the signboard on which we wrote “Spastic Children Society of Turkey” with red letters on a sheet of grey tin. We hung it from the window of an apartment on Halitağa Street in Kadıköy on a september day. The year was 1972. The beautiful autumn of İstanbul had begun and we were happy.

What happened from that day on, what we achieved, and what Turkey has done... You will find it all in this small book. Call it memories or historical information or a compilation.

I want our young friends now doing what we used to do to pass their knowledge onto others when they are old like me and that these memories will give them hope and strength to work and pave illuminated ways. I extend my appreciation and gratitude to them once again. I start to write my memories with love and thanks to our dear spastic children who remind us of humanity.” Prof. Dr. Hıfzı Özcan

Cerebral Palsy

“İnjury during or right after birth inflicted to parts of the brain which control movement is referred to as “Cerebral Palsy” in international medical literature.

Among the group of children studied by child neurology specialists, those who display central nervous system symptoms statistically constitute the highest number suffering from this ailment which will be explained in this book. Cerebral palsy which concerns many branches of science and which is both a medical and a social problem is a top agenda item throughout the world. Therefore, it is a multidisciplinary subject encompassing various sciences including medicine.

We hope that this book will be of help to scientists, families and to dear children and adults with Cerebral Palsy.” Prof. Dr. Hıfzı Özcan (Editor)

Guide for Families with Babies at Risk

“Babies with neurological growth restriction due to problems during pregnancy, birth or during the early post-natal period are called babies at risk. The growth, nutrition, vaccination and neurological development of babies at risk have to be closely monitored following their discharge from the intensive care unit. Development evaluations should be made, their hearing and sight problems should be determined and they should be included in the early response program.

These programs carried out with families of babies at risk increase the knowledge of mothers regarding child development and support the stimulus to babies provided by mothers and the social environment.

The purpose of this book is to provide up-to-date information to all medical personnel monitoring babies at risk, to ensure that the families are informed and help babies with many risks and their families in terms of physical, developmental and psychosocial growth.” Prof. Dr. İpek Akman (Editor)
